When and why do you need to retune your car?

If your car has already been tuned and you're considering additional modifications, for the safety and durability of your car's engine it is crucial to have the car re-tuned.

During the initial tune done on your car we invest significant time adjusting the ECU's parameters to ensure optimal performance while maintaining solid engine safety, and this is tailored to your specific vehicle with any modifications done at that time - it doesn't take into account future modifications you may do.

Any extra modifications performed after your car is tuned will alter the parameters the engine can safely operate in - the more air you jam into an engine (with boost or a better intake, wastegate, etc) you will need to increase the amount of fuel the engine receives to compensate for this. The ECU has been programmed to work with the modifications on your car at the time of the tune and it will not adjust to suit new ones. Therefore, any engine or large transmission/torque convertor modifications done without a retune could potentially cause severe engine damage.

Why do we charge for re-tuning your car? Even though we already have your car's file on record, rewriting the tune and dyno testing are necessary to ensure it is calibrated correctly for new modifications. This requires time, resources, and expertise to achieve the best results. While there is a fee for re-tuning, It is significantly less than the cost of your initial dyno tune.

Why We "Tuner-Lock" the ECU

After tuning your car, we "tuner lock" the ECU so, if someone else with the same tuning software connects to your ECU, they cannot view or modify our tune.
We do this primarily to protect against someone without sufficient experience attempting modifications which can cause catastrophic engine failure. Second, our team has invested years of experience in developing and refining our tunes, and keeping the ECU locked prevents others from misusing or selling our work.

If you decide to have your car re-tuned elsewhere, the new tuner will be able to overwrite our tune with their own. Professional Tuners will NOT require an ECU to be unlocked before they perform a tune to your car, nor will they ask to edit the current tune.
